Read The Scripts Film Review: Was The Tender Bar worth the watch?

Updated: Aug 22, 2023

Amazon Prime The Tender Bar was a really good movie to watch not a lot of coming of age movies are good but this one was funny and the story was interesting. We see a young J.R. and his mother Dorothy move into her mother and father home so they can have a fresh start, and try to make sure that J.R. have a good upbringing. Ben Affleck was the star of the movie and the interaction between Affleck and Daniel Ranieri who plays Young J.R. was so funny, Affleck who play Uncle Charlie show J.R. how to survive in the world and encourage him to follow his dreams to become a writer and show him how to enjoy life.

After time passed we see J.R. all grown up going to college so he can become a lawyer but we see him hanging out with his new friends and fall in love with Sidney and there relationship was okay but you can tell she was just using him and he take the break up hard, but J.R. tries to get her back and Sidney tells him she doesn't love him. I really didn't care about the J.R. and Sidney relationship and having him trying to get her too fall in love with him was not necessary. Watching J.R. go through the ups and downs of trying to get a story in the New York Times was good but I would have like to see J.R. Dad be around causing trouble when J.R. was going through a rough time,

The story between J.R. and his Dad was simple he was a alcoholic and was not around a lot but I wish there was more interaction with the both of them in the film. Lily Rabe, Tye Sheridan and Christopher Lloyd was good in the movie and the ending was okay I just really like Affleck being the father figure in this film and showing J.R. how to be a responsible man and understand that pursuing your dreams is worth it.

I don't expect everyone to like this film but I would recommend to watch it and I will give this film a 6.5/10 and this film came out in 2021 but it was a limited release so technically this is a 2022 film.
