5 Films you should watch for Black History Month 2023

Number 5

Malcolm X is a 1992 Biography Drama about Malcolm X rise to becoming the Black Nationalist leader and Muslim Minister that went from being a gangster to being the face of the Nation of Islam. He was outspoken about racism towards black people, the assassination of John F. Kennedy and eventually Elijah Muhammad saw Malcolm as a problem to the Nation. After being exiled from The Nation and setting up The OAAU Malcolm was killed by some members of The Nation but after his death people still quotes Malcolm X and remember the impact he made. Rest in Peace to Malcolm X



Number 4

BlacKkKlansman is a 2018 Black Comedy, Crime Biography about Ron Stallworth who infiltrated The Klux Klan in 1970s and trying to expose them to the people of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Stallworth was the first Black Detective who took a risk and decided to expose The Klan and with the help from some of his white co-workers they was able to take down some members. After they was told to stop the investigation Stallworth got the last laugh when he tells David Duke that the man he was talking to on the phone was a black man all along.



Number 3

Summer of Soul is a 2021 Music Documentary about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival that took place at Mount Morris Park now name Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem New York and it ran from June 29 to August 24 1969. This documentary shows us different Black Music Artists performing in front of hundreds of people and the stories that some of the artists told was really good. The Harlem Cultural Festival also ran the same day as the Woodstock Festival and when it ran against Woodstock it did take away most people eyes from the Harlem Festival but it didn't stop the artists from entertaining the people who came to watch the festival live.



Number 2

The Great Debaters is a 2007 Biography Drama about the story of Melvin B. Tolson and The Wiley College Debate Team trying to make a difference in the 1930s as they are working hard to show everybody that they can compete against some of the best teams from different colleges. We see them dealing with racial segregation and also dealing with problems they had with each other. They were able to overcome their problems and fears and they got a chance to go up against Harvard University Debate Team for the National Championship and they made history and beat Harvard for the championship.



Number 1

Selma is a 2014 Biography Drama about The 1965 Voting Rights March from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama after the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing we see Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. try to get LBJ to pass legislation to allow Black People to vote. After LBJ told MLK he could not help him MLK decided to go to Selma to make a change. We see how hard and difficult it was for MLK and The Black Civil Rights Activists to get the Voting Rights Act pass but they didn't give up and they was able to make history. Rest in Peace to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr
